🎒 What to Do When Your Homeschool Child Doesn't Want to Go to College

If your homeschool kid has zero interest in college, you're not alone, and you're not behind. Here's how to build a real career path they'll actually love.

Let's Start With the Moment Most Homeschool Moms Don't Talk About

My son Garrett was seven years old when I knew. Not in a vague, parenting-instinct kind of way. I knew the way you know when you've watched your child spend four straight hours reorganizing the dog's grooming kit, talking to every animal in the neighborhood like they're old friends, and then come inside with more peace on his face than he ever has sitting at a school desk.

Garrett wasn't going to college. And that was completely okay.

But here's what wasn't okay, the fact that when I went looking for a homeschool college alternative that could actually prepare him to run a business someday, I came up completely empty. There were plenty of curricula that could teach him to pass a test. None that could teach him to build a life doing what he loves.

So if you're reading this because you Googled something like "what do I do if my homeschool kid doesn't want to go to college," pull up a chair. This post is for you.

First: Stop Treating College as the Default

Our culture has spent decades telling families that college is the universal answer. Get good grades, go to college, get a good job. But that path was designed for a specific kind of learner, a specific kind of career, and a specific era that honestly no longer exists the way it used to.

There are currently 3.5 million skilled trade jobs that cannot be filled in the United States. Meanwhile, roughly 44 million Americans are carrying student loan debt, and more than half of college graduates are underemployed in their first job, meaning they're not even using the degree they went into debt for.

Electricians, plumbers, welders, pet groomers, carpenters, and photographers are earning exceptional livings, in many cases outpacing their college-educated peers, without a single student loan payment. The trades are not a consolation prize. They are a legitimate, in-demand, often lucrative path that homeschool families are uniquely positioned to pursue.

If your child has zero interest in college, they are not broken. They might just be wired for the real world earlier than most.

What a Real Homeschool College Alternative Actually Looks Like

Here is where I want to be really practical with you, because vague encouragement doesn't build a future. What does a career-focused homeschool curriculum actually need to include?

Real Skills Taught by Real Professionals

Not a parent reading from a textbook. Not a YouTube rabbit hole. Actual certified instructors who work in the field every day. If your child wants to be a welder, they should be learning from a welder. If they want to open a bakery, they should be learning from someone who has actually run one. The credibility of the instruction matters, and it matters even more when you're building toward a career, not just a grade.

A Student Portfolio They Can Actually Use

One of the biggest challenges for homeschool graduates who skip college is proving what they know to future employers, clients, and licensing boards. A strong homeschool portfolio builder closes that gap completely. Every project, every completed trail, every skill earned should be documented and presentable. That portfolio is their resume before they even turn 18.

A Curriculum That Grows With Them

An eight-year-old exploring dog grooming looks different from a fourteen-year-old who is serious about opening a grooming business at eighteen. The right homeschool trades curriculum should have levels, beginner through advanced, so your child can go deep, not just wide. Surface-level exposure isn't career preparation. Depth is.

Academic Foundation Alongside Vocational Training

Let's be clear: choosing trades over college does not mean skipping academics. The strongest unschool career path includes solid grounding in math, reading, writing, and critical thinking, woven into the vocational work rather than treated as a separate chore. Because the electrician who can't read a contract, or the small business owner who can't do basic bookkeeping, is going to struggle. Brain and hands together. Always.

The 7 Paths Your Child Could Be Walking Right Now

When I built Trade School Trails, I organized everything around real-world career paths, not school subjects. Seven paths. Thirty trails. Each one structured so a child can start as young as eight and graduate with genuine, documented, career-ready skills.

The Animal Path, grooming, dog training, dog boarding, horse care, vet science. The Trade Path, electrician, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, painting, auto care, roofing, and more. The Culinary Path, knife skills, baking, cooking, and running a food business. The Digital and Tech Path, coding, drone operation, cybersecurity, and AV/IT systems. The Creative Path, photography, videography, and graphic design. The Business Path, entrepreneurship, marketing, and small business operations. The Home and Life Skills Path, personal finance, real estate, event planning, and more.

Garrett, my original inspiration for this whole platform, is deep in the Animal Path, and watching him work through grooming certifications with real instructors, document his projects, and talk about his business plan like the little entrepreneur he is has been one of the greatest joys of my life as a homeschool mom.

But I've watched other families find their footing here too. The thirteen-year-old who already knows she wants to do graphic design. The eleven-year-old obsessed with baking who started the Culinary Path and hasn't looked up since. The fifteen-year-old who has been fixing things around the house since he could hold a wrench and is now working through the Trade Path with purpose.

These kids are not behind. They are ahead.

What About Transcripts and Official Documentation?

I hear this question constantly from homeschool parents, and it's a legitimate one. If my kid isn't going to college, do transcripts even matter?

They absolutely still matter, and in some ways, they matter even more when your child is going into the trades or entrepreneurship. Apprenticeships, licensing boards, business loans, trade school programs, and future employers all want to see that a young person took their education seriously.

Trade School Trails includes official transcripts and a portfolio builder in higher subscription tiers precisely because we believe every homeschool graduate deserves to walk away with documentation that reflects the real work they did. No apologies, no gaps, just a clear, professional record of what they learned and what they can do.

How to Have the Conversation With Your Child

If your child is somewhere between eight and sixteen and has basically told you, directly or through their complete lack of enthusiasm, that college is not their plan, here is how I'd encourage you to approach the conversation.

Lead With Curiosity, Not Direction

Ask them what they want their life to look like at twenty-five. Not what job they want. What does a good day look like? What are they doing? Who are they helping? What problem are they solving? Kids who have never had space to dream about their own lives can sometimes surprise you with the clarity of their vision once you actually ask.

Take the Interest Seriously, Even the Unusual Ones

Garrett wanted to groom dogs. Not be a vet, not work at a shelter, groom dogs. That is specific. That is a business. That is a career path. Whatever your child is obsessed with right now, treat it as the starting point of a real conversation about how it becomes a livable, sustainable, joyful career. Because it can.

Show Them What the Path Looks Like

Sometimes kids reject college not because they have a better plan, but because nobody has ever shown them that a better plan exists. When Garrett saw that there was a real curriculum built around becoming a professional in the animal care world, with real instructors, real credentials, and a real portfolio, something clicked for him. He wasn't just dabbling anymore. He was training.

You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone

One of the hardest parts of homeschooling a child who doesn't fit the traditional mold is the loneliness of it. You're making decisions that most of the parents around you aren't making. You're researching things that Google barely has answers for. You're carrying a vision for your child that the rest of the world doesn't quite see yet.

I built Trade School Trails for exactly that parent. For the mom who knew her son wasn't going to college when he was seven and spent the next six years searching for something that actually met him where he was. For the dad whose daughter wants to be a welder and just needs someone to take that seriously. For the family that has always known their child would build something extraordinary, they just needed a trail to follow.

That is what we are. Thirty trails. Seven paths. Real instructors. Real credentials. Real careers in the making.
